Nanny Stories
My Favorite Parts of Au Pair Life in the Netherlands 🇳🇱🚲
Being an au pair in the Netherlands is about so much more than helping a family with their daily routines—it’s an experience filled with little moments that make you feel at home. From cycling through rainy mornings with happy children to discovering beautiful Dutch landscapes on weekends, every day brings a new memory.
A Typical Dutch Morning: The Bakfiets Adventure 🚲
One of my favorite parts of au pair life is the morning school run. Packing two cheerful children into the front wooden box of a bakfiets is the perfect introduction to Dutch culture.
The morning air is often cool and misty as we cycle through quiet streets. The children laugh, point at ducks swimming in the canals, and turn an ordinary ride into an adventure. Even when a sudden drizzle begins to fall, it becomes part of the fun instead of a problem.
Arriving at school and hearing a cheerful “Fijne dag!” from the children gives me a true sense of belonging. For a moment, I don’t feel like a visitor—I feel like part of the community.
Discovering the Dutch Meaning of Gezellig 🥞
Living in the Netherlands has taught me the beauty of gezellig—a feeling of warmth, comfort, and togetherness.
On rainy afternoons, the large windows of the house become the perfect place to watch boats glide by while staying cozy indoors. The kitchen fills with the delicious smell of homemade pannenkoeken or tiny poffertjes cooking on the stove.
Around the dining table, my host family and I share stories, laughter, and simple treats like hagelslag on fresh bread. These everyday moments are often the ones that make a new country feel like a second home.
Weekend Adventures Across the Netherlands 🚂
One of the greatest advantages of being an au pair is having the freedom to explore. Friday evenings are often spent planning weekend trips with other international au pairs.
With an NS train ticket in hand, the Netherlands feels incredibly easy to discover. One Saturday might be spent wandering through the historic streets of Utrecht, another exploring the medieval beauty of Amersfoort, or relaxing in a cozy café with a slice of Dutch apple pie.
By Sunday evening, I return to my host family with photos, stories, and memories to share over dinner.
My Favorite Place: The Veluwe 🌲🚴
Although the Netherlands has many beautiful destinations, the Veluwe remains one of my favorites.
A peaceful morning bike ride through the forest feels almost magical. Dewdrops sparkle on the moss, pine trees fill the air with their fresh scent, and wide cycling paths wind through forests, sand dunes, and purple heathlands.
Nature always has surprises. During one ride, I stopped my bike after noticing movement in the morning mist. A magnificent red deer stood quietly about fifty meters away, watching me for a few peaceful seconds before disappearing back into the trees. It’s a memory I’ll never forget.
After cycling through the cool forest air, stopping at a small wooden pavilion for a warm cup of coffee and a slice of gingerbread cake is the perfect ending to the adventure.
More Places Worth Exploring 🌷🏰
The Veluwe – Nature, Forests, and Villages
The Veluwe is the perfect destination for anyone who loves cycling and nature. Riding through forests, sand dunes, and charming villages like Otterlo and Hoog Soeren offers a completely different view of the Netherlands beyond its busy cities.
Lisse and the Flower Fields 🌷
During spring, the flower fields around Lisse transform into a breathtaking sea of color. Endless rows of tulips stretch across the countryside, creating one of the most iconic Dutch landscapes.
Walking among vibrant pink, yellow, red, and purple flowers while traditional windmills stand in the distance feels like stepping into a postcard.
Amersfoort – A Walk Through History 🏰
Amersfoort is another destination I love visiting. Its medieval streets, picturesque canals, and beautifully preserved buildings create a unique atmosphere.
Walking through the famous Koppelpoort, exploring cobblestone squares, and enjoying coffee at a historic café make it an ideal weekend getaway.
The Real Beauty of Au Pair Life
Being an au pair in the Netherlands isn’t only about childcare. It’s about discovering a new culture, building meaningful relationships, exploring hidden gems, and creating memories that last a lifetime.
Understanding Daily Life as an Au Pair 🏡
Becoming Part of a Dutch Family
Many people think an au pair simply “helps with children,” but the role is much more than that. You become part of the family.
Your daily life may include:
-
Preparing breakfast and helping children get ready for school.
-
Taking them to school, sports activities, music lessons, or playdates.
-
Preparing simple meals and helping with children’s laundry and bedrooms.
-
Organizing games, crafts, and outdoor activities.
-
Joining family traditions such as birthdays, Sinterklaas, and King’s Day.
One thing you’ll quickly notice is how Dutch children are encouraged to become independent from an early age. As an au pair, you learn to support them while also allowing them the freedom to explore and grow.
The First Weeks: Learning to Feel at Home
The first weeks in a Dutch household can be both exciting and overwhelming.
You’ll gradually learn:
-
How the family organizes their mornings.
-
Each child’s personality and daily routine.
-
Where the local supermarket is.
-
Dutch cycling rules.
-
How to communicate in a different culture.
Small challenges soon become funny memories:
-
Accidentally cycling the wrong way.
-
Trying to understand fast Dutch conversations.
-
Discovering that “a little rain” never stops Dutch people from riding their bikes.
Slowly, your host family’s house begins to feel like home.
Learning the Dutch Way of Life 🚲
Being an au pair allows you to experience everyday Dutch culture—not just visit it as a tourist.
You’ll quickly discover that:
-
Almost everyone rides a bicycle, from young children to grandparents.
-
Rain rarely changes anyone’s plans.
-
Dutch people appreciate honesty and direct communication.
-
Families often enjoy simple evenings together rather than expensive entertainment.
-
Coffee breaks (koffietijd) are important social moments.
You’ll also experience some classic Dutch habits:
-
Eating bread for lunch.
-
Celebrating birthdays in a circle (kringverjaardag).
-
Taking off shoes before entering the house.
-
Planning everything well in advance using a family calendar.
Building Friendships with Other Au Pairs 🤝
One of the most rewarding parts of the experience is becoming part of the international au pair community.
Many au pairs:
-
Meet through agencies, WhatsApp groups, or language classes.
-
Organize coffee dates, city trips, and weekend adventures.
-
Celebrate birthdays and holidays together.
-
Become each other’s second family while living abroad.
Sharing your Dutch adventure with people from different countries makes the experience even more meaningful.
Learning Dutch 🗣️
Many au pairs arrive without speaking Dutch, but everyday life quickly becomes a language lesson.
You’ll soon learn expressions like:
-
“Goedemorgen!” – Good morning.
-
“Dank je wel!” – Thank you.
-
“Tot straks!” – See you later.
-
“Lekker!” – Delicious, nice, or enjoyable.
Children are often the best teachers because they naturally help improve your pronunciation and introduce you to funny everyday expressions.
Learning Dutch isn’t just about speaking another language—it helps you connect more deeply with your host family and Dutch culture.
The Challenges Nobody Talks About 🌧️
Every au pair journey also has its difficult moments.
Common challenges include:
-
Missing your family and friends back home.
-
Feeling lonely during the first months.
-
Adjusting to different parenting styles.
-
Coping with homesickness.
-
Learning when to join family life and when to enjoy your own personal space.
These challenges often become the moments where you grow the most. Living abroad teaches independence, confidence, patience, resilience, and flexibility.
