What Are an Au Pair’s Duties?

The following childcare and light household duties are permitted under the au pair programme.

✅ Childcare Duties (Permitted)

• Feeding the children.

• Putting the children to bed and getting them up.

• Assisting with personal care, such as changing nappies/diapers, washing, dressing and brushing teeth.

• Preparing breakfast, lunch and packed lunches.

• Preparing the children’s belongings for school or childcare.

• Taking the children to and from school, childcare or other activities.

• Organising and supervising age-appropriate activities and playtime.

✅ Light Household Duties (Permitted)

• Washing dishes and loading/unloading the dishwasher.

• Preparing simple meals.

• Keeping the kitchen clean and tidy.

• Doing small grocery shopping or running minor errands.

• Washing, folding, ironing and putting away the children’s laundry.

• Tidying the children’s bedrooms and the au pair’s own room.

• Performing light household tasks, such as vacuuming, dusting and keeping floors clean.

• Making and changing the children’s beds.

• Taking out the rubbish/recycling.

• Feeding and walking family pets.

• Watering and caring for houseplants.
