The Nanny
A nanny is a professional, often qualified childcare provider who cares for your children in your own home. Unlike a regular babysitter or an au pair, a nanny also plays an active role in the children’s development and upbringing and performs light household duties directly related to the children.
Our nannies are carefully selected based on their experience, skills, education, motivation, and personality. All candidates come from EU countries, speak English or German, and are highly motivated and flexible. You will receive a comprehensive candidate profile, including a detailed interview report and assessment from our local interviewer, the results of a psychometric personality test, a medical certificate, reference checks, a motivation letter, and photographs.
Babs Au Pair Agency screens all candidates in accordance with the guidelines of BONAPA (Dutch Association of Au Pair Agencies), IAPA (International Au Pair Association), and the IND (Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service).
Our international nannies have extensive experience in caring for children. They are available to work flexibly 5 to 6 days per week (minimum 36 hours). By mutual agreement, they can also assist with light housekeeping and cleaning duties related to the household.
Working hours
- 35 to 40 hours per week.
- Occasional evening babysitting (once or twice a week) may be included.
- Nannies are generally happy to travel with the family when required.
Salary
The salary depends on the nanny’s age and experience. Live-in nannies typically earn between €13 and €17 per hour.
The Difference Between a Nanny, an Au Pair, and a Childminder
Nanny
A professional childcare provider who works in the family’s home according to an agreed schedule. A nanny may work part-time or full-time, and in some cases the childcare may qualify under the Dutch Childcare Act.
Au Pair
Usually a young person from abroad (aged 18 to 30) who lives with the host family for a limited period. An au pair provides childcare and light household assistance in exchange for accommodation, meals, and pocket money. The primary purpose of an au pair stay is cultural exchange.
Childminder (Registered Childcare Provider)
A childminder usually cares for several children at the same time, typically in the childminder’s own home or, in specific cases, in the parents’ home.
A Nanny in Your Home
Because a nanny works in the familiar environment of your own home, your children’s daily routine can be maintained more easily. Many parents choose a nanny because of the flexibility this type of childcare offers, especially when they have irregular working hours.
In the Netherlands, families may be eligible to apply for childcare allowance (kinderopvangtoeslag) for registered nanny childcare, provided the applicable legal requirements are met.
